Description
The Handrail Anti-Skate Stud is manufactured from 316L stainless steel and has a machine-polished finish. It is designed to sit flush on 50mm diameter handrails and is secured using a mechanical security fixing through the rail.
The stud interrupts the continuous surface skaters or BMX riders may otherwise use for grinding, helping to protect the handrail from damage while its compact profile minimises interference with normal pedestrian use.
For more information on selecting anti-skate protection for handrails, see How do I choose the right anti-skate stud?.
Material Information
The Handrail Anti-Skate Stud is manufactured from high-quality 316L stainless steel for long-term external use. The material provides excellent corrosion resistance and is particularly well suited to demanding outdoor environments where the stud may be exposed to rain, snow, moisture and other weather conditions.
Design
The Handrail Anti-Skate Stud is shaped to sit flush against the top of a 50mm diameter circular handrail.
A security fixing passes through the stud and handrail before being secured from the underside. This creates a clean installation with the fixing largely concealed while helping to protect it against tampering and removal.
Its compact, rounded form is designed to interrupt the surface required for grinding while minimising unnecessary obstruction to people using the handrail.
Because handrail diameter is critical to achieving a close fit, the rail should be measured before specifying the stud. See
What measurements do I need for anti-skate studs? for guidance on measuring handrails and determining the quantity required.
Where anti-skate studs are being fitted to handrails associated with stairs, ramps or guarding, the wider requirements applying to the handrail should also be considered. See
How does Part K of the Building Regulations apply to Handrail Anti-Skate Studs? for further guidance.
Application
The Handrail Anti-Skate Stud is designed for:
- Circular handrails measuring 50mm in diameter
For handrails with a different diameter or profile, a bespoke anti-skate stud may be required.
Installation
The Handrail Anti-Skate Stud is mechanically fixed through the handrail rather than resin bonded.
Installation typically involves:
- Drilling two parallel 7mm diameter holes, one through the top of the handrail and one through the underside.
- Clearing the holes of dust and debris.
- Positioning the anti-skate stud on top of the handrail.
- Passing the security fixing through the stud and handrail.
- Securing the locking mechanism beneath the handrail.
Security fixing: We recommend a fixing pin with a 6mm diameter and an 8mm head to fit within the stud design.
Installation equipment required: Drill, appropriate drill bit and security fixing, available as an option.
