How do you choose the right material for tactile studs and strips?
Tactile studs and strips are manufactured from several different metals and polymers, each with its own advantages. The most common choices are stainless steel, aluminium, brass, bronze and TPU. Inserts and textured surfaces can then be added to change the appearance, grip or visual contrast.
The material should not be chosen on appearance alone. It has to withstand the environment, foot traffic, cleaning and fixing method while remaining in keeping with the surrounding surface. In practice, the best material is the one that balances all of those requirements rather than winning on one characteristic.
Stainless steel tactile indicators
Stainless steel is the most widely specified material across our tactile ranges. It has a clean, modern appearance, performs well under heavy foot traffic and is available with different surface textures and inserts. The choice then comes down to the grade and finish.
Grade 304 is a strong general-purpose stainless steel suited to many internal and less aggressive environments. Grade 316 includes molybdenum, giving it greater resistance to corrosion in coastal, exposed or contaminated conditions. We default to 316L across much of our range because its all-weather capability and longevity make it a dependable choice, even though it costs more than 304 or 303.

Aluminium tactile indicators
Aluminium is lightweight, corrosion resistant and much easier to machine than many harder metals. It can be anodised in different colours, creating more freedom where the indicator needs to contrast with its surroundings or form part of a wider design palette.
The main compromise is that aluminium is softer than stainless steel. That does not make it unsuitable, but the expected traffic and likelihood of impact should be considered. Our article on why aluminium is used for tactile indicators covers its main benefits.
Brass tactile indicators
Brass provides a warm gold colour and works particularly well with natural stone, timber and traditional interiors. It is durable and naturally corrosion resistant, but its surface will change with age. If a bright polished finish is required, it will need more regular cleaning than stainless steel.
Bronze tactile indicators
Bronze has a darker, richer appearance than brass and develops a distinctive patina. It is resistant to corrosion and metal fatigue, fully recyclable and visually well suited to heritage or high-quality public-realm projects.
The disadvantages are cost and maintenance. Bronze is considerably more expensive than aluminium or stainless steel, and anyone who does not want the surface to patinate will need to maintain it. TPU tactile indicators
TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane, is a hard-wearing polymer that combines flexibility with resistance to abrasion. It can be manufactured in bright colours, making it a useful option where contrast and visibility are central to the design.
It is lighter and generally less expensive than a full-metal indicator, although it does not provide the same metallic appearance. Our guide to thermoplastic polyurethane explains the material and its uses.
Full-metal studs or studs with inserts?
A full-metal stud relies on the profile of its surface to provide grip and tactility. An inserted stud combines a metal body with a contrasting or textured insert. Inserts can introduce colour and provide additional surface texture without losing the appearance and strength of the surrounding metal. The downside of studs with inserts is that the inserts can wear independently of the metal stud surrounding it and may need replacing, particularly if the colour is being relied on for guidance.

What else affects material choice?
Before settling on a material, consider:
- Whether the installation is internal, external, coastal or chemically exposed.
- The expected level of foot traffic, wheeled traffic and impact.
- The surrounding material and the possibility of dissimilar-metal contact.
- The required colour, reflectance, texture and visual contrast.
- How the indicators will be cleaned and whether patination is acceptable.
- The fixing method, replacement strategy and available budget.
Summary
For demanding external environments, 316L stainless steel is often our first choice because of its durability and resistance to corrosion. Aluminium is a strong option where weight, colour or cost is important. Brass and bronze bring warmth and character, while TPU provides colour and flexibility. The final decision should always be made against the actual environment rather than the material name alone.
