How do I choose the right tactile stud or strip?

What should you consider when choosing tactile indicators?

Tactile studs and strips can appear very similar at first glance, but small differences in their dimensions, materials, surface patterns and fixings can make them better suited to different applications.

The right product should follow the requirements of the project rather than the other way around. Before choosing a tactile indicator, it is worth establishing what it needs to communicate, where it will be installed and what conditions it will encounter. Once those details are known, the available options become much easier to narrow down.

What is the intended application?

Begin with what the finished surface needs to do. Is it intended to warn someone of a crossing, platform edge, steps or another hazard? Does it need to create a directional route through an open space? Alternatively, is the requirement for visual demarcation, additional grip or an anti-skate application rather than tactile guidance?

Products should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they are described as studs or strips. The intended application influences the product’s shape, dimensions and surface profile, as well as the pattern in which it is installed.

The relevant guidance and layout should be established by the responsible designer or approving authority. Selecting a product with appropriate dimensions is important, but it does not make every arrangement created with that product automatically compliant.

Do you need a tactile stud or a tactile strip?

Tactile studs are individual raised indicators that are normally repeated in rows to create a blister or offset blister pattern. They can also be used for demarcation, anti-skate purposes and other architectural applications.

Tactile strips are longer indicators. Depending on their orientation and arrangement, they can be used to recreate corduroy warning surfaces or form directional guidance paths.

Which dimensions and profile are required?

The diameter, length, width and height of a tactile indicator affect both its appearance and how it is experienced underfoot or through a cane. The dimensions may also be influenced by the guidance associated with the intended application.

It is important to distinguish between the dimensions of an individual product and the layout of the complete surface. A tactile stud may have dimensions associated with DfT guidance, for example, but its spacing, orientation and relationship with the surrounding feature still determine whether the finished arrangement performs correctly.

The surface profile also matters. Plain, grooved, crosshatched and material insert products each provide a different combination of appearance, tactility and grip. Where additional slip resistance is required, look for evidence relating to the specific surface rather than assuming that every textured product will perform in the same way. Which material should you choose?

Stainless steel, aluminium, brass, bronze and TPU are all used to manufacture tactile indicators. There is no single best material for every installation.

Stainless steel is the most widely specified material across our tactile ranges. It provides a clean appearance, performs well under regular foot traffic and is available with numerous finishes and surface profiles. For demanding external environments, we generally favour 316L stainless steel because of its resistance to corrosion and long-term durability. Aluminium is lighter and easier to machine. It can also be anodised in different colours, making it useful where appearance, contrast or cost is an important consideration. It is softer than stainless steel, so the expected level of traffic and impact should be considered.

Brass and bronze provide warmer finishes that work particularly well with natural stone, timber and heritage surroundings. Both materials change in appearance as they age, which may be desirable or may create an additional maintenance requirement.

TPU offers a lighter, coloured alternative to metal. It can be particularly useful for temporary or self-adhesive installations and where strong visual contrast is required.

Is an insert or contrasting finish needed?

Some tactile studs combine a metal body with a coloured or textured insert. This allows additional colour and surface texture to be introduced without losing the strength and appearance of the surrounding metal.

The need for an insert depends on the contrast, grip and visual effect required. Contrast should always be considered in relation to the actual surrounding surface. A product that appears highly visible against a white catalogue background may behave very differently when installed into pale stone or reflective flooring.

Maintenance should also be considered. Polished metals, coloured inserts and naturally patinating materials will each age differently and may require different cleaning regimes.

Which fixing suits the installation surface?

The fixing method should be considered at the same time as the visible product. It should not be left as an afterthought once the tactile stud or strip has already been selected.

For concrete, natural stone and many other solid surfaces, a pin-fixed product secured with resin is often the most permanent solution. Depending on the product, the fixing may use a machined, welded or threaded pin. Our guide to tactile stud and strip fixing pins compares the main options.

Thin porcelain or ceramic tiles require more caution because drilling, resin pressure or an unsuitable pin can damage the tile. Self-adhesive, screw-fixed or alternative low-depth products may be more appropriate where the surface cannot safely accommodate a conventional fixing pin.

The substrate material, its thickness, the floor build-up and any concealed services or membranes should therefore be checked before the product is ordered.

Do you need a standard or bespoke product?

The fact that a product can be customised does not mean every project needs a bespoke solution. In many cases, establishing the application and substrate will reveal that a suitable standard product is already available.

What information should you provide when requesting advice?

Providing the following information will help us recommend a suitable product:

  • Whether the installation is internal or external.
  • The surrounding surface and its approximate thickness.
  • The required tactile pattern or available drawing.
  • Any preferred material, finish, colour or insert.
  • The expected level of pedestrian traffic and environmental exposure.
  • The approximate quantity or area being covered.
  • Any restrictions on drilling, fixing depth or adhesive use.
  • The required programme or delivery date.

Photographs, drawings and samples of the surrounding material can also be useful, particularly where appearance, visual contrast or the fixing method needs to be considered.
