Temporary Tactile Mats

The Future of Temporary Tactile Guidance

Introducing a new innovation in accessibility, the Studmarc Temporary Tactile Mat. These tactile mats provide tactile wayfinding and warning in the absence of static installed tactile indicators. At times when works are in progress on the street it can be difficult for the visually impaired to navigate unexpected changes to pedestrian pathways, particularly when they’ve become accustomed to a static route. The interruption could come in the form of a crossing being moved to an unfamiliar location or works on a path forcing the visually impaired onto a makeshift path on the road. They also double up as an aid for the neurodivergent, particularly those with autism, as it provides a singular point of focus that can help distract from the overwhelming stimulus and direct them on their route.

These tactile mats serve as a way of bridging the gap between the known and the unknown by laying out a directional route or hazard warning surface for visually impaired pedestrians to navigate safely and with confidence.

Intuitive Installation

The Studmarc temporary tactile mats slot together in a simple and easy-to-use way, not unlike a jigsaw, making their application straight forward and efficient. There are multiple combinations of mat types that can be joined together into a coherent system for whatever the situation calls for. Suitable for use on ramps, grass, tarmac, and concrete.

Tactile Patterns

There are two distinct patterns, the first is a blister hazard warning pattern to warn of a pedestrian crossing point, both controlled and uncontrolled. They provide the same tactile feedback in layouts set out in the Department for Transport’s guidance.

The second pattern is that of a directional guidance route to guide pedestrians along a safe and obstacle free route to their destination. This patterns layout is an approved alternative to the Department for Transport’s  directional guidance layout. This layout provides a highly intuitive and more space-efficient alternative in guiding the visually impaired, even being able to factor in choices of destination.

Prototype Stage

The Studmarc Temporary Tactile Mat is currently at the prototype stage and is undergoing testing by end users to ensure they provide an optimal experience in guiding the visually impaired.

The final product will be made from a hardwearing and colourfast material with multiple anti-slip textures, both on the tactile signals as well as the surrounding surface, to mitigate the chances of slips, trips, and falls. The mats will be sufficiently weighted to prevent movement through strong winds, removal, or shifting underfoot.

Accessibility Technology Integration

As we progress technologically in the accessibility space, Studmarc recognises the need to adapt the digital realm to the physical. The Studmarc Temporary Tactile Mat will be compatible with a whole host of technology suites aimed at guiding the visually impaired using their handheld devices such as mobile phones and tablets.
