Retrofitting tactile studs and strips – what are the benefits?

There are a great many benefits to retrofitting tactile studs and strips in place of the more traditional blister and corduroy tiles. Retrofitting can be of benefit to both pedestrians and road users alike with additional long term bonuses.

Retrofit to limit disruption

Installing new tactile paving slabs often requires digging up existing pavement or tarmac. This can lead to road or pathway closures, diverting pedestrians and road users alike. Along with this goes health and safety equipment, barriers, traffic control, equipment and tool hire, and in some cases limited working hours.

Retrofitting studs and strips can prevent the need for the bulk of these add-ons. They can be installed in the same patterns as traditional blister and corduroy paving, with the same dimensions and stud heights, simply using a drill and some site preparation equipment e.g., dust removal tool and resin. The only preparation the surface will need is a bit of cleaning, as most pre-installed surfaces will be suitable for the installation of studs and strips.

The same effect can be easily achieved without needing to dig up the surface and close a road or pathway.

Cost-effective installation and maintenance

Installing tactile studs and strips can be incredibly cost-effective in the long term. As mentioned earlier, third-party hired equipment is no longer necessary when retrofitting. Due to the relative simplicity of their installation, tactile studs and strips only require basic tools. On the very rare occasion that a tactile stud or strip would fail and come loose, there would only be the need to replace one item rather than a whole tile, should it split or become worn down.

Staffing needs are also reduced as installation can be performed by a single individual or duo, rather than a team or crew.

Superior aesthetics

If you’re installing within the vicinity of a listed building, in a gated area, shopping centre, cinema, or restaurant, you can match your stud selection to the venue. There are endless combinations of metals (bronze, brass, anodised aluminium, stainless steel) and TPU/anti-slip tape coloured inserts to complement any building or location. If you’re in need of red or yellow signal colours for controlled and uncontrolled crossings there are both red and yellow TPU/anti-slip tape inserts.

It’s easier

Retrofitting studs and strips is simply easier. No heavy lifting is needed, simply drill, clean, resin, and install.

Alternative installation methods

Depending on the location (indoor or outdoor) and substrate, there are other ways that tactile studs and strips can be installed. If they’re to be installed on wood, why not use studs and strips with a screw-hole opening? If they’re being mounted indoors on polished floors, then a self-adhesive stud or strip may be the way to go. It can be entirely situational but there are options available for a quality installation.
